Pre-Wedding Photography of Bihari Wedding: Explore the Beauty of Bihari Wedding Day Rituals

It's time to unravel the beauty of Bihari wedding rituals with the best wedding photographers in Kolkata:

The Sata Narayan Katha is the first pre-wedding ritual in a Bihari wedding, and marks the start of the wedding occasion. It is a prayer service that is performed by the groom's family and is organized by the bride's family. The priest narrates the "Katha" within this ritual. The flame of the Haven Kund is lit and keeps burning till the end of the wedding day!

Chekha is the engagement ceremony that is officially held in the bride's house. The groom and his family come to visit the house of the bride. The groom's family brings shagun (gifts) during this visit, including sweets, clothes, jewellery, and dry fruits. On the next day, the bride visits the groom's house and brings shagun. During this visit, they officially exchange rings and complete the ring exchange ceremony.

This is a pre-wedding haldi ceremony. The married ladies from the groom's family send turmeric paste to the bride, which is then applied to her body. During this ceremony, all the women joyfully dance to the folk music of Bihar to celebrate the occasion! 

In this pre wedding Bihari marriage ritual, the bride's brother visits the groom with a thaal in his hand. This symbolises the acceptance of the groom into the family of the bride. He then applies tilak on the forehead of the groom and offers shagun and turmeric paste for the haldi ritual. The groom's family then offers the bride's wedding dress and bridal garments to the brother for the official wedding day! 

In this ritual, the traditional mandap for the wedding is set up using bamboo, banana leaves, and mango leaves!

In this haldi ritual, the turmeric paste from the in-laws is applied to the bride and groom. This turmeric is also smeared on the faces of married women of both families. Everyone sings and dances during this ritual!

The parents of both the bride and groom perform a pooja to seek blessings from their ancestors and family elders. The parents of both sides offer clothes and money to the family elders and ask for forgiveness from ancestors, which is known as Paunpooji. 

The Silpoha ceremony is the rice grinding ceremony. This ceremony is performed as soon as the sun comes out on the wedding day. This is the last pre wedding ceremony. The groom's mother wraps the rice within a chunni and uses a Silbatta to grind it. This process is known as the Imli Ghutai and is performed to prevent the evil eye on the groom. The groom's maternal uncle offers a betel nut to the groom, which he places in his teeth, after which his mother eats it.

Now, it's time to learn about the main wedding day rituals! Whether it's Bihari or Bengali wedding photography, the wedding rituals and traditions never fail to charm our souls. Find out more:

The first wedding ritual is an "aarti" or "parchhavan" performed by the groom's mother. During this ceremony, the groom's mother applies a tilak on the forehead of groom and prays to protect her son from evil and blesses the couple for a happy marriage. This is done right before the Baraat leaves the home. 

The groom's entire family will now leave home to join other baraatis at the wedding venue. The groom arrives at the venue with a decorated car, horse carriage, or a buggi! There's celebration in the air, as the bride's family welcomes the groom and his family to the venue with a garland. 

The garland exchange between the bride and groom is known as "Jaimala". After the garland exchange is done, the bride's mother and other married women of the family gather around in the mandap to heat betel leaves in a lamp and burn them to ashes. The ashes are then used to smear them on the groom's face, after which they throw cow dung on the groom's back. This is one of the most unique rituals done at weddings in Bihar!

During the Kangnabadhana wedding ritual, the poojari ties a holy thread on the right hands of both the groom and bride. This thread is made of money, haldi, mango leaves, colorful rice, and cotton. After this, a barber cuts the toenails of the couple. Following this ritual, the Kanyadaan ceremony is initiated. 

5. Bhaisur Nirakshan, Kuldevtaki puja, and Pheras

In this ceremony, the bride's father-in-law and elder brother-in-law gift the bride saris and more jewellery. Then, the couple prays to the Kuldevta and other ancestral deities. After the prayers are offered, they start the pheras around the sacred fire, where rice with roasted husk is thrown into the fire.

Post Wedding Rituals of Bihari Weddings: The Union of Bride and Groom

The union of both the bride and groom is now complete. However, it's not over yet! The post wedding rituals include:

This is the first post-wedding ritual in Bihari weddings. The couple wakes up early on the day after the wedding to dress up for the Kohwar Parikshan. Then, in the Salami ritual, the elders of the family shower the groom with gifts and cash, after which the groom prepares to leave the house with her bride for the Vidai. 

2. Swagataarti, Mooh Dikhai and Chauthari

The welcome ritual, or the Swagataarti, welcomes the groom to the bride's house. After completing the aarti during the ritual, the parents shower the couple with flowers and rice. A copper vessel full of rice, a plate of Alta, and two cane baskets are then placed on the entrance. The bride then pushes the copper vessel and then places both of her feet on the plate of Alta, and then the cane baskets. After this, the Mooh Dikhari ceremony is done, where the bride is showered with gifts and money. The Chauthari pooja is then done to thank the gods! 

This is the last post-wedding ritual, where the bride is given the keys to the household, and has to cook around five dishes. After the family is done with the meal, the bride is once again showered with more gifts and blessings by the family!
